FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE

October 20, 2015

Cinnaminson High School, a four-year public high school, of Cinnaminson Township in Burlington County, New Jersey, will be teaming up with the DeSean Jackson Foundation (DJF), on October 30th to host its 2015 inaugural “Purple Out” to raise Pancreatic Awareness.  The DeSean Jackson Foundation was founded by former Philadelphia Eagle and present Washington Redskins’ wide receiver, DeSean Jackson, and his mother, Gayle, in 2009, after DeSean’s father, William “Bill” Jackson died from Pancreatic Cancer.

Michele Iaconelli, Cinnaminson High School, English and Psychology teacher, states, “We are so excited to host a “Purple Out” at our home football game with Burlington City, on October 30th.  The cheerleaders will be wearing purple bows and the football players will be wearing purple sweat bands on their wrists.  In addition, we have purple leis for the band members to wear; and, purple ribbon bandanas to sell to raise donations for Pancreatic Awareness.  The Student Council officers will be walking around the stands with purple on also”.

Gayle Jackson, President, of the DeSean Jackson Foundation, was extremely emotional when she was approached by Cinnaminson High School principal, Darlene Lellewelln, about hosting a “Purple Out”.  Gayle stated, “We lived five minutes from the school for several years while DeSean was a Philadelphia Eagle.  The parents and students were are neighbors and friends; and, we launched our first anti-bullying campaign at Cinnaminson High.  We are humbled and honored. They know our pain, passion and purpose. They know our hearts.”

“Purple Out” is a national initiative that was developed by DJF in partnership with the faculty and students at Andrew G. Schmidt Middle School, Fenton, Michigan that empowers students to be change agents by advocating for Pancreatic Awareness, crucial funding for research; and, petitioning the NFL for an annual “Purple Out”.  DeSean and Gayle cultivated a culture that encourages the youth to utilize DeSean’s national platform as an elite, professional athlete to “Be the Change You Want to See in the World” by teaming up with DeSean.  “One Team, One Purpose” is DeSean’s concept for mobilizing youth across the nation regardless of their NFL team affiliation to join the Jackson family in this fight.

Final Fenton Poster

DeSean Jackson, wide receiver, Washington Redskins, and CEO of The DeSean Jackson Foundation, extends his humble, sincere gratitude to the Fenton High School, Fenton, MI, students, faculty and administration for joining AGS Middle School in a collaborative “Purple Out” to help DeSean raise awareness to the dreadful disease, Pancreatic Cancer, which Jackson’s father, William “Bill” Jackson died from during DeSean’s rookie year with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Purple Out campaign was developed by AGS Middle School in 2013 to advocate for the National Football League to give equal consideration to Pancreatic Cancer Awareness as the league gives to campaigns for breast cancer, youth obesity, and most recently, domestic violence.

The students will continue to advocate for the NFL to allow the teams to wear purple during the month of November in to raise awareness to this dreadful disease for which there is no cure and receives less funding than other types of cancers.  DeSean and his mother, Gayle, are honored that the students in Fenton reached out to DeSean and are committed to helping them achieve their goal.

DeSean Jackson, CEO, of the DeSean Jackson Foundation, has teamed up with the Farm Bureau of Virginia to raise awareness and funds for research for Pediatric Cancer. DeSean Jackson and his mother, Gayle Jackson, are taking time out from their national campaign raising awareness to Pancreatic Cancer to lend their support to the Farm Bureau of Virginia that solicited their support to raise awareness and funds for research for the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in memory of Tomas Musser (2001-2010) who loved football; and, NFL Philadelphia Eagles’ W.R. DeSean Jackson.

According to the American Cancer Society, childhood cancers are rare, making up less than 1% of all cancers diagnosed each year. About 11,630 children in the United States under the age of 15 will be diagnosed with cancer in 2013. Childhood cancer rates have been rising slightly for the past few decades. Because of the major treatment advances in recent decades more than 80% of children with cancer now survive 5 year or more.

DeSean Jackson commends St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital for the crucial role it plays in battling pediatric cancer and appeals to his fans to support for this extremely worthy cause. One Team, One Purpose!

DeSean Jackson Teams Up With Andrew Schmidt Middle School “Purple Out”

PRESS RELEASE

November 24, 2013

Fenton Paw 2col

DeSean Jackson, of the Philadelphia Eagles, and his foundation, The DeSean Jackson Foundation, have teamed up with the Andrew G. Schmidt Middle School, in Fenton, Michigan to raise awareness to Pancreatic Cancer and advocate for research for funding and support for those diagnosed with this dreadful disease and their families.

DeSean Jackson and his mother, Gayle Jackson, founded The DeSean Jackson Foundation, in 2009 in memory of William “Bill” Jackson, DeSean’s father who died shortly after being diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. Jackson states, “I lost my hero, my best friend and my father to Pancreatic Cancer and I deal with that loss each and every day of my life; but, right now it’s not about me and family. It’s about AGS and these kids who reached across the league to me to help their voices be heard.”

In October 2013, the Jacksons were contacted by Jill Smigiel, a teacher at AGS, through Twitter on behalf of several student athletes who were adamant about the fact that Pancreatic Cancer receives less funding for research and less national attention than other cancers; and, the life expectancy is less than other cancers. The students wanted to encourage NFL players to wear Purple in November to raise awareness to Pancreatic Cancer as they did across the league in October for National Breast Cancer Awareness.

The students challenged DeSean Jackson to Stand Up for Pancreatic Cancer by being the first to wear purple socks during the month of November in the NFL. Mrs. Jackson advised the students that would not be possible. Then, students decided to advocate by wearing purple socks themselves in protest. Mrs. Jackson was so impressed by their solidarity and advocacy that she convinced her son, DeSean, to help AGS develop a national platform so their voices would be heard. Thus, the AGS “Purple Out” has been embraced by the administration, faculty and student population; and, Monday, November 25th the students will launch this historical, inaugural event.

DeSean Jackson commends AGS for helping their students develop a life-long pattern of advancing the common good of becoming successful, purposeful members of society with empathy and compassion for the less fortunate. Jackson requests that media attention be focused on AGS during the “Purple Out” and the real story about Pancreatic Cancer and its impact on our society will be heard in the voices of those who know it best. “It’s not about me today”, states Jackson, “it’s about AGS and the kids.”
