DeSean Jackson, of the Philadelphia Eagles, sends his sincere congratulations to Donovan Troy, a 2020 high school graduate from Metro Atlanta, who matriculated at the University of West Georgia this week. Jackson states that he is extremely proud of Donovan’s accomplishments despite adversity; and, commends Donovan’s parents for the integral role they play. “Family is first and foremost in everything”, states Jackson, “including life in order for us to be empowered and fulfill our destiny”.

DeSean Jackson met the Donovan family in 2012 when the Make-A-Wish foundation honored a wish from Troy Donovan, a 10-year-old, to spend a day with his idol Philadelphia Eagles‘ wide receiver, DeSean Jackson.

One month after he was born, Donovan Troy was diagnosed with a life-threatening form of sickle-cell anemia. Donovan had to avoid situations that could exacerbate his condition, such as being outside in extreme heat, or even swimming. Football specifically was discouraged, especially after Donovan’s spleen was removed when he was a toddler. Donovan needed monthly blood transfusions. Contact sports could create serious complications. Donovan’s uncle, Cedric, was 32 when he died from the same condition. But Donovan loved football, and while his parents wanted to protect him, they also didn’t want him spending his whole life in hospitals. How the youngster from Atlanta became a fan of the thirteen-year wide receiver from Philadelphia remains a mystery to his family. “My husband and I were born and raised in Atlanta; so, we’re both natives, but he is not a Falcons fan at all,” Tara said. “He loves DeSean Jackson. He always talks about how fast DeSean Jackson is.”

Over the years, Tara Troy has continued to keep DeSean Jackson and his mother, Gayle, informed of Donovan’s accomplishments and also extended the unwavering support for DeSean. It began with Donovan’s wish and has developed into an “extended family”.

Diagnosed as an infant with a hematologic disorder, 10-year-old Donovan was told he wouldn’t be able to play sports. But he beat the odds, and his love for football and the Philadelphia Eagles made DeSean Jackson his hero, and his wish.

DeSean Jackson Foundation Supports Black Doctors’ Covid-19 Consortium Testing in Philadelphia’s Marginalized Communities

On May 25, 2020, DeSean Jackson, of the Philadelphia Eagles, and his charity, the DeSean Jackson Foundation, awarded a $5,000.00 NFL Foundation Players’ Social Justice Fund grant to the Black Doctors’ Covid-19 Consortium “BDCC”. BDCC is Philadelphia’s first mobile Covid testing site which was launched by Dr. Ala Stanford using her personal assets, a small grant from the CARES Act and a Go Fund Me Page.

DeSean Jackson states that health professionals have rightly called racism a public health crisis and the Corona Virus pandemic has emerged as perhaps the most telling example of the impact disparities in healthcare in our nation’s history.  While more than 138,000 people in the United States have died from from COVID-19 roughly 18% of them are Black, though only 13% of Americans are Black.  Furthermore, in Philadelphia, Black people are disproportionately affected by the pandemic and have accounted for half of the 23,951 positive cases of COVID-19 and more than half of the 1,433 people who have died  from the virus as of June 10th, while the city’s Black residents make up about 44% of the population. Yet, the city has failed to focus on serving the crucial for testing in the Black community and many Black residents face barriers to accessing the city’s testing sites.  Therefore, DeSean Jackson deemed Dr. Ala Stanford’s Black Doctors’ Covid-19 Consortium a worthy recipient of the prestigious NFL Foundation Social Justice Players’ Fund grant for her social justice and humanitarian efforts.

To date, Stanford and her Black Doctors’ Covid-19 Consortium have tested more than 5,000 residents at 22 triage-mobile testing events in partnership with Philadelphia’s Black churches.  Roughly 96% of those tested are Black, Stanford said. “This whole enterprise came from a life of being Black in America and having to wait, of people telling you, “Be patient, don’t worry, help is coming.  “I was tired of waiting for someone to save us.”  Stanford said it costs roughly $25,000 a day to test between 250 and 300 people and with no vaccine available for COVID-19 in the foreseeable future it is imperative that the city provide funding to sustain BDCC because #BlackLivesMatter.

Gayle Jackson, President, DeSean Jackson Foundation has been advocating for additional support for BCDD.  Gayle states that Dr. Stanford’s business model consists of the free COVID-19 testing, outreach to marginalized communities; and, a concierge-after care and wrap around service.  This meets a critical gap in services because the vulnerable population BCDD serves needs assistance when a positive diagnosis is received; and, access to healthcare and resources for those afflicted, their loved ones and support for the caregivers.  Mrs. Jackson  immediately reached out to Julie Hirsey, Director of Community Affairs, Philadelphia Eagles, when Gayle learned that a bid BCDD had submitted to the City of Philadelphia for $6.9 million in funding for testing from the Center of Disease Control and Prevention to expands its operations and perform contact tracing was declined. [Philadelphia Eagles’ also have a Social Justice Fund.]

DeSean Jackson said the issue of the rejection of the Black Doctors’ Covid-19 Consortium bid raised his awareness and social consciousness to the City of Philadelphia’s longer-term failure to develop and cultivate an effective W/MBE system. [Women and Minority Business Enterprises].  For instance, in the 2019 fiscal year, business enterprises owned by people of color were only awarded 36% of the city’s contracts, amounting roughly $254 million, according to the city’s Office Economic Opportunity 2019 report.  He advocated behind the scenes for a reversal of the city’s decision.

Status To Date:

On, June 9, 2020, Jim Kenney, Philadelphia Mayor, Thomas Farley, Health Commissioner; and, members of the City of Philadelphia City Council announced the commitment to provide funding to the Black Doctors’ Covid-19 Consortium during a news conference at Enon Baptist Tabernacle Church where BDCC was providing free Corona Virus testing.  The $1.3 million city contract will last six months with the potential to continue the partnership.

On June 11, 2020, Dr. Stanford and the Black Doctors’ Covid-19 Consortium entered into a partnership with SEPTA, the 6th largest transportation system in the United States, to provide free COVID-19 testing at four transit stations, in Philadelphia.  The partnership comes at a critical moment for SEPTA.  The 9,500-strong workforce lost seven colleagues to the Corona Virus; and, nearly 300 employees have tested positive for the virus.  While 60% of those afflicted have returned to work and new safety measures are in place, the region is in the midst of a re-opening that will increase risk for SEPTA employees.

NFL player, DeSean Jackson, who was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, in March 2019, gave back to Philadelphia, on Saturday, June 8th, when he hosted a free camp for 250 youth, in North Philadelphia, in partnership with the Blackhawks Athletic Club.  Jackson told NBC sports reporter, John Clark, that he is “very blessed and fortunate to be back in Philadelphia.”  “I feel it’s my responsibility to give back,” he stated, “This is about helping the community and inspiring our youth to strive for greatness.”

The Blackhawks Athletic Club opened the registration to its members and other youth organizations in the Philadelphia area.  Each age group of youth had the opportunity to work out with DeSean’s personal, professional coaches from LA, local youth coaches, who showed them the ‘tricks of the trade’ gained from years of experience; and, the latest technology in developing elite technical and performance skills.

For Gayle Jackson, the level of adulation DeSean has received since returning to Philly; and, reflecting on the terms and conditions of his departure, means that his foundation should “give back” much more.  “We’re back, in Philly now and we’re getting all this love”, she said.  “If you’re getting all this love, you have to do something, and that something should be the best that you can give.”  That is what the DeSean Jackson Foundation is about:  Mentoring, empowering and building confidence in these young kids, Gayle Jackson said, “To me, that can change a person’s life.”

DeSean Jackson embracing leadership role with young Eagles teammates

Arcega-Whiteside, DeSean Jackson, Eagles, NFL, NFLPA, Philadelphia Eagles

PHILADELPHIA, PA, 5/30/2019
By: Glenn Erby

When you watch the Philadelphia Eagles practice, the guy wearing No. 10 displays the same game-breaking speed and amazing burst on his routes, but something’s extremely different this time around for DeSean Jackson. Now 32 years old, Jackson has embraced the leadership role that accompanies a player of his stature.

“Just really being able to mature,” Jackson said on his mindset after his release from the Eagles, via 24/7 Sports. “When I was here I was young the first time around. Leaving, just kind of stepping up and being a pro, taking my job seriously. Not saying I never took my job serious before. It took time to grow and just to learn. I’ve been through a lot and I have a lot to give back to the young guys.

“Like JJ (Arcega-Whiteside). He’s asking me questions about routes and all the younger guys. I just have a lot to offer to these young dudes. That’s what I’m here for.”

Arcega-Whiteside, the rookie wide receiver from Stanford University, has probably benefited the most from DeSean Jackson’s return to the Eagles and the valuable experience he offers.

“He’s a great leader. Every time I ask him a question, he stands aside and makes sure he knows what I’m asking,” Arcega-Whiteside said (via Eagles Press Pass). “He’s been very helpful. I mean, he’s played 12 years in the league. He definitely knows a thing or two.”

Jackson without a doubt is a changed man since he last donned the Eagles uniform and if he translates that league-leading 18 yard per reception into huge gains for the Eagles, then things will have come full circle for the man known simply as, D-Jax.

DeSean Jackson Partners with E. E. Just Elementary to Empower & Motivate Tampa Youth

DeSean Jackson, DeSean Jackson Gives Back, E.E. Just Elementary, NFL, NFLPA, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Press Release

Tampa Florida,  September 3, 2018

DeSean Jackson, All Pro wide receiver, for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and his mother, Gayle Jackson, announced today that they have accepted an invitation, from Ire Carolina, Principal, Ernest E. Just Elementary, to partner with the Jacksons and their foundation in an effort to empower and motivate Just Elementary students.

Gayle Jackson states that the timing is perfect.  Last year, we were new to the Tampa Bay NFL franchise market. DeSean’s work schedule, the move and getting acclimated to a new team and City were first and foremost.  This year, we wanted to re-brand and launch the DeSean Jackson Foundation in Tampa; and, it was important to DeSean that we go “off the grid” to develop a partnership with an elementary, middle and high school where he could be very engaged and impact the lives of those we serve.

Just Elementary is good fit because Ernest E. Just was a pioneering African-American biologist, academic & science writer.  Gayle wants to challenge the students to preserve Mr. Just’s legacy; and, hopefully, aspire to a career in research for a cure for Pancreatic Cancer.  She also wants to encourage other NFL Moms, of Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ players, to join her in bringing Read Across America to Just Elementary.

DeSean is looking forward to meeting with the young men and boys in the Just Gents Club and sharing his experiences and “Rites of Passage into Manhood’ as learned from his father, the streets of Crenshaw, the NFL and now as a father himself.

Ernest E. JUST ELEMENTARY

August 29, 2018

To:  Mrs. Gayle Jackson and Mr. DeSean Jackson –  DeSean Jackson Foundation

The Omega Gent’s mentoring was established here at the Ernest E. Just Elementary in 2010.  Omega Psi Fraternity, along with school personnel, have been mentoring about 35 students a year. This club’s program ideas are based on the vision of Stephen G. Peters, founder of the original gentlemen’s club, “Just Gents”, that was established here at Just Elementary in 2008.   The ideals of the program are to reach and educate All of our children one child at a time. The Just Gents Club provides a vehicle to accomplish this goal.

Our vision at Just Elementary is for students to become life-long learners and have a positive impact on their community. Just Elementary is located in West Tampa across from the North Boulevard Homes where students have been a product of generational poverty. Just is a Title I school with 98% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. Although the community is undergoing redevelopment and our population has decreased, our student needs have not changed. We strive to provide them with as many opportunities as possible to prepare them academically and socially, but the support of outside organizations is imperative to help us meet our goals. My mantra is the Possibilities are Endless….Just Believe!

Just would love the opportunity to partner with your son, DeSean, and the DeSean Jackson Foundation. Personally, I am a fan of DeSean’s and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It would truly be an honor for my students and school to be affiliated with your foundation.

I look forward to working with you in the near future.

Sincerely,

Ire Carolina, Principal

ABOUT:  Ernest E. Just Elementary

7202014_32454_2.jpg

Ernest Everett Just (August 14, 1883 – October 27, 1941) was a pioneering African American biologist, academic and science writer. Just’s primary legacy is his recognition of the fundamental role of the cell surface in the development of organisms. In his work within marine biology, cytology and parthenogenesis, he advocated the study of whole cells under normal conditions, rather than simply breaking them apart in a laboratory setting. In addition to his scientific contributions, On November 17, 1911, Ernest E. Just assisted three Howard students in establishing Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Originally a Junior High School that opened to relieve overcrowding at nearby Blake High School, Just had subsequently been used as a Head Start and 6th Grade Center, and then as an Early Childhood Center, serving preschool, Head Start, and Kindergarten children, until its closing in 2003. In 2003, construction began on a new Elementary School that would, for the first time in 30 years, provide services to the students from its community.
On August 5, 2004, Ernest E. Just Elementary opened its doors to a student population that quickly rose to over 650 children. The staff at Just is striving to provide each and every student with an education and sense of self-worth that will carry them well beyond the education system. Carrying the torch in a legacy that began with our namesake is a challenge that enriches not only the students and staff of Ernest E. Just Elementary, but also the community and beyond.

FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE

AGS Middle SchoolJill Smigielski, a teacher at AGS Middle School, in Fenton, MI, and her students are taking an opportunity during the first ever, World Day for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness, to petition the National Football League once again to consider giving equal consideration to Pancreatic Cancer Awareness as it does for other issues such as Breast Cancer Awareness, Youth Obesity, Domestic Violence to name a few.

Pancreatic Cancer Awareness

AGS has tried for several years to reach the NFL to arrange a meeting with the students; and, challenged then, Philadelphia Eagle, DeSean Jackson to join in their advocacy campaign.  Jackson and his mother have assisted the students in raising their collective voices through DeSean’s status in the NFL.  Jackson states, “I did not promise them it could be done but instead committed both my Mom and myself to teach them how it should be done.”  AGS and The DeSean Jackson Foundation launched its first internal “Purple Out” in 2013 and is scheduled to partner with Fenton High School, Fenton, MI, on November 19, for their Second Annual Purple Out.

AGS44

The students’ argument for a “Purple Out” in the NFL is premised upon their research that Pancreatic Cancer is prevalent in the NFL; and, the NFL has the ability to help find a cure for Pancreatic Cancer as it has addressed other issues that resulted in radical or systematic change.  There is no cure for Pancreatic Cancer and it receives less funding than other cancers yet ranks 4 th in the list of the most deadliest, dreadful diseases.  The research presented to DeSean Jackson, and his Mom, by AGS thus far follows:

–George Halas died in 1983 and used to own the Chicago Bears

NFL Agents:
Gary Wichard died in 2011
Ken Staninger died in 2013
Walt Sweeney, played for the Chargers died in 2013
Randy Jackson played for Buffalo, 49ers and Eagles died in 2010
TJ Turner played for Patriots, died in 2014
Johnny Bailey played for Bears, Cardinals and Rams died 2010
Gene Upshaw played for Raiders and was union president, died 2008
John Gordy played for Detroit, died 2009
Dave Pureifory, played for Packers, Bengals and Lions, died in 2009
Ricky Sandoval, head of security for Lions died in 2009

Jill Smigielski and her students ask that you join them in this the first ever, World Day for Pancreatic Cancer, in petitioning the National Football League for a month of Purple for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness.
